Boroaluminosilicate glasses form the basis of many industrial products and they exhibit complex structural behavior due to the mixed networkformer effect. Based on available structural nuclear magnetic resonance data and a previously proposed approach, we here establish a temperature-dependent constraint model of indentation hardness of sodium boroaluminosilicate glasses. The model correctly predicts the trends of hardness with varying Si/Al and Na/B ratios, including local minima and maxima at intermediate compositions. This topological approach is thus proving to be a valuable tool for exploring and designing new boroaluminosilicate glass compositions with tailored hardness.

Rigidity transition in materials: hardness is driven by weak atomic constraints.

Understanding the composition dependence of the hardness in materials is of primary importance for infrastructures and handled devices. Stimulated by the need for stronger protective screens, topological constraint theory has recently been used to predict the hardness in glasses. Herein, we report that the concept of rigidity transition can be extended to a broader range of materials than just ...

The effects of Exposure Times and Light Curing Sources on Surface Micro-Hardness of a Resin Modified Glass Ionomer

Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the influenceof different light curing systems and curing times on the micro-hardness of aresin modified glass ionomer. Methods: Forty two samples of ResinModified Glass Ionomer (RMGI) were prepared using stainless steel cylindrical mold(8 × 2 mm) and randomly divided into six groups of seven. Three groups werecured with a Quartz Tungsten Halo...

Microstructure, mechanical and thermal properties of chalcogenide glasses and glass-ceramics based on Se-As-Ge system nucleated by Sn

In particular, chalcogenide glasses and glass-ceramics are new materials that exhibit good transparency in infrared region (0.8-12µm). We can overcome the main weakness of these glasses by improving the hardness through controlling crystallization. In this paper, we report results of a study on chalcogenide glasses in the ternary system of As-Se-Ge with nominal composition of Snx (Se...

An investigation on Mechanical Properties of Apatite-Wollastonite-Diopside Glass-Ceramics Composites

Apatite-wollastonite (A-W)-phlogopite glass-ceramic is considered to be difficult to resorb, but often, it has been incorporated in particulate form to create new bioactive composites for potential maxillofacial applications. With various compositions, the present work has attempted to prepare apatite-wollastonite (A-W)-phlogopite glass ceramic composites, by applying sintering. Here, three-poi...

Vickers hardness and Specific wear resistance of E glass reinforced poly methyl methacrylate

Poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) is one of the most widely accepted biomaterial in prosthetic dentistry due to its acceptable advantages. However the conventional PMMA used are far from being ideal because of their inferior mechanical properties. So the present study is to determine the Vickers Hardness and specific wear rate of the silane treated E glass fiber reinforced PMMA. Vickers Hardness ...
